Everyday Apprentice
"But we all, with unveiled faces, looking as in a mirror at the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit." 2 Corinthians 3:18 NASB
Series: Everyday Apprentice
Devotional: 1 of 9
Dallas Willard once wrote, "as an [apprentice] of Jesus I am with him, by choice and by grace, learning from him [Jesus] how to live in the Kingdom of God. This is the crucial idea. That means, we recall, how to live within the range of God's effective will, his life flowing through mine. Another important way of putting this is to say that I am learning from Jesus to live my life as he would live my life if he were I. I am not necessarily learning to do everything he did, but I am learning how to do everything I do in the manner that he did all that he did."
Throughout Scripture, we see Jesus oscillating between time alone with His Father and life in community with others. Following His example, we are invited to come away with Him into the quiet place. Away from the noise of everyday life, we begin to experience the words of Psalms 16:11 NRSV, "In [His] presence there is fullness of joy; in [His] right hand are pleasures forevermore." In His presence, with our gaze fixed on Him, we can carefully observe all that He says and does.
Living in close proximity to our Master, we soon learn to organize our days around becoming more like Him. Although our souls are being continuously transformed in solitude, we recognize that our lives were never meant to be experienced in isolation. As apprentices of Jesus, we are grateful to work alongside our Master, who is so loving, so patient, and so kind. In Him, even the most basic decisions are made with an eternal perspective in mind. In time, every aspect of who we are naturally begins to orbit around Jesus and His Kingdom.
In this series, we will explore what it looks like in practice to live in the Kingdom as an everyday apprentice of Jesus. We will consider how to posture our lives so that the Holy Spirit can continually renew our minds in Christ. And we will observe the habits and rhythms that help keep us in a posture of surrender.
