God is in the Business of Restoration
"Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have stripped off the old self with its practices and have clothed yourselves with the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of its creator." Colossians 3:9-10 NRSV
Series: Being with Jesus: Solitude and Silence Part 3
Devotional: 4 of 4
So far in this series, we have considered two experiences we are sure to encounter when we lean into the practices of solitude and silence:
Rest: Jesus is inviting us to come away with Him into the quiet place.
Repentance: We are free to let the Holy Spirit examine the condition of our hearts.
Today, we will consider one final experience: Restoration.
We serve a God who is in the business of restoration. Whether we realize it or not, He is actively working on our behalf to transform even the most fractured places in our lives. Daily, He invites each of us to come away with Him and rest for a while. It is here that, often for the first time, we begin to experience Jesus as our Great Physician - the only One who is capable of restoring our fractured minds.
As apprentices of Jesus, we are called to be His ambassadors living "in the world, but not of the world." However, if we are to take our call seriously, we are sure to bump up against the lies of our culture. Lies about ourselves, about others, and about who God is that often begin to attach themselves to the innermost places in our minds.
In his letter to the church at Colossae, the Apostle Paul writes, "Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have stripped off the old self with its practices and have clothed yourselves with the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of its creator." (See Colossians 3:9-10 NRSV)
Away from the noise of daily life, solitude and silence provide us with a safe place for our Great Physician to strip away, one by one, the lies that have seeped into our minds. On the operating table, each lie is carefully identified, removed, and replaced with the Truth. This is not a one-time transaction but an ongoing process of transformation in which we increasingly reflect the character of Christ.
Friend, Jesus is inviting you to come away with Him into the quiet place. He alone is your Comforter, Healer, and Physician in whom you are sure to experience rest, repentance, and restoration.
