Journaling: Learning to Wait Patiently for the Lord

"I waited patiently for the LORD; he inclined to me and heard my cry." Psalms 40:1 NRSV

Series: Journaling: Writing the Story of Your Life with God

Devotional: 2 of 4

Last week, we began a new journey looking at how the Holy Spirit might want to use the practice of journaling to help us become more like Jesus.

Today, we will consider the first of three fruits that often emerge from the practice of journaling: Patience.

Before we go much further in this series, it's worth mentioning that journaling is not something we have to do, it doesn't earn us spiritual brownie points, and it isn't necessary on our journey through this life with God. Like every other spiritual discipline, journaling is a means to an end. And that end is always to become more like Jesus. Journaling is simply one of many ways for us to posture our lives in the presence of God. In this place of surrender, the Lord does what only He can do - transform our hearts from the inside out. Whether you choose to journal daily, weekly, or situationally, journaling is a gift, not a task to be checked off on a to-do list.

With that in mind, as we lean into the practice of journaling, how does patience begin to grow in our lives?

Journaling invites us into a time where we can slow down and catch our breath. A time to let our bodies finally catch up with our minds. A time to push back on the cultural norms of hurry and hustle. And a time to be still and "wait patiently for the Lord," so that we might hear clearly from Heaven (See Psalm 40:1).

Journaling creates a sacred space where we learn to practice waiting on the Lord. Full of hope and anticipation, our souls "wait in silence" for Him to speak (See Psalm 62:5). In time, what we practice in the quiet place alone with Jesus begins to shape the person we are becoming. In this place our hearts begin to soften towards our friends, family, and neighbors. And it is here that the Holy Spirit empowers us to extend the same undeserved patience to others that the Lord has so graciously showered upon us.

As you go, begin to consider how the Lord might be inviting you into a new rhythm of journaling. Not as a heavy burden, but as a gift. A gift of space and time that is sure to produce in you the fruit of patience.
