Learning Simplicity in an Age of Consumerism

"But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." Matthew 6:33 NRSV

Series: Learning Simplicity in an Age of Consumerism

Devotional: 1 of 5

Consumerism is the driving force of our current culture.

Simplicity has all but vanished from modern life.

Consumerism tricks us into prioritizing our own temporary earthly kingdom at the expense of advancing Jesus' eternal heavenly kingdom.

Simplicity forces us to face our craving for status, our unquenchable thirst for material wealth, and our pursuit of comfort and security.

Consumerism subtly markets the lie that more and more of everything is the ticket to happiness.

Simplicity creates time and space for the Holy Spirit to cultivate a heart that is content in seasons of plenty and seasons of great need.

As we navigate the everyday, ordinary moments of life, how do we practice simplicity?

Jesus said it plainly. "Seek first the Kingdom of God." For those who intentionally choose to posture their lives under His Lordship, all other priorities will naturally fall into place. It is here that simplicity becomes an outward expression of an inward transformation. (See Matthew 6:33 NRSV)

Commenting on the practice of simplicity, Pastor John Mark Comer said, "The goal here is to live with a high degree of intentionality around what matters most, which, for those of us who apprentice under Jesus, is Jesus himself and his kingdom."

Friend, I invite you to join me on a journey as we explore this ancient practice of simplicity. Is it possible that God wants to breathe new life into this dry and desolate area of our lives? In this series, we will consider four movements that will address the current condition of our hearts and the outward reality of who we are becoming.

  • The movement from ownership to stewardship.

  • The movement from indulgence to sacrifice.

  • The movement from greed to generosity.

  • The movement from envy to contentment.

As you go, take a few minutes in solitude to prayerfully reflect on the following questions:

In what ways has your life been formed by the cultural norms of consumerism? How does the temptation to consume tug at your heart and, by extension, your wallet? Are there areas of your life that feel unnecessarily complex? Begin to observe how the practice of simplicity might bring freedom in each of these areas.
