The Movement from Greed to Generosity
"Such is the end of all who are greedy for gain; it takes away the life of its possessors." Proverbs 1:19 NRSV
Series: Learning Simplicity in an Age of Consumerism
Devotional: 4 of 5
So far in this series, we have looked at two movements of the Holy Spirit on our journey to rediscover simplicity in a culture riddled with consumerism.
The movement from ownership to stewardship.
The movement from indulgence to sacrifice.
Here is a third: The movement from greed to generosity.
Scripture repeatedly warns against the consequences of greed. Here are just a few examples:
Solomon, known for his wisdom, declared that greed "takes away the life of its possessors." Provers 1:19
And just a few chapters later, he wrote that "Those greedy for unjust gain make trouble for their households." Proverbs 15:27
"And he (Jesus) said to them, 'Take care! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of possessions." Luke 12:15
These scriptures, and many others like them, remind us how easily we are often lured into a life consumed by greed. The desire for more and more possessions has a way of multiplying upon itself. Like a giant python that can take weeks to digest its prey, greed slowly and ever so subtly consumes our thoughts, energy, and finally, our hearts. Truly, the condition of our hearts cannot be both generous and greedy at the same time.
Generosity is both a condition of the heart and a discipline to be practiced. It protects us against falling into the cultural rhythm of accumulation without boundaries. In time, unchecked accumulation is destined to give rise to greed. But a life of generosity with a constant eye on the poor and marginalized is sure to be a fruitful garden. As the years pass, generational fruit will blossom, changing lives forever and ultimately helping bring the Kingdom of Heaven to earth.
As you go, take time in the stillness of solitude and silence to wrestle with the following questions:
What would it look like if our lives were known for generosity? What difference might it make if our eyes never wandered from the needs of the poor and marginalized? What if our hands remained open, never possessing wealth - simply stewarding it well for a season and then letting it slip through our fingers with no fear of tomorrow?
