Waiting With God in the Present Moment

“Be still before the LORD, and wait patiently for him; do not fret over those who prosper in their way, over those who carry out evil devices.” Psalms 37:7 NRSV

God is always on time. He's never early, and He's never late. Because He exists outside of time, He can see all that is happening in us and around us (past, present, and future). 2 Peter 3:8 reminds us to "not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day." With these words, the Apostle Peter is reminding us that God's promises, plans, and perspective are eternal.

However, as Jesus' apprentices, we are bound by time and space. Because of this reality, waiting on God can often feel like wandering around in a dark room alone. When the future moment we so desperately crave begins to swallow up our present life with God, we are in jeopardy of missing out on what God has for us in the here and now. When our eyes are only fixed on the future, we devalue the experiences of our current season of life.

Adele Ahlberg Calhoun once wrote, "God's people learn to wait with God in the present moment. Because that is the only place God is found. The past with its regrets is irretrievably gone. The future with its what-ifs is out of our control. But now, right now, it is possible to be with God. It is possible to wait and say yes to God in what is."

What if, in our season of waiting, God is in the process of transforming us into the people we will need to be in the future? Is it possible that, in His sovereignty, the gap between our current circumstances and what we are waiting on God to answer (our unanswered prayer) is the person we are becoming in Christ?

As you go, take time to "be still and wait patiently before the Lord" (See Psalm 37:7 NRSV). Even when He is silent and life feels dark and lonely, you can trust that He is with you in your waiting. What if the waiting you are experiencing right now is the destination, a lifelong journey with God that matters more to Him than any future place in time?
