Blessed By God to be a Blessing

“I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.” ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭12‬:‭2‬ ‭NRSV‬‬

Series: Life of the Beloved

Devotional: 3 of 6

We all go through days, even weeks, and sometimes seasons of life when the voices of the world seem to be all we can hear: voices of loneliness, doubt, and fear.

At times, these voices have a way of becoming the dominant message ringing in our ears, making it extremely difficult to hear the voice of Love that tells us that we are made in God's image, that God desires to know and be known by all of creation, and that we are His beloved children created to be in relationship with Him.

In these moments, we need to continually be reminded that God has blessed us.

We need to be reminded that Jesus, through His work on the Cross, is inviting us to put our faith and hope in Him so that, like "Abraham who believed," we too might receive His blessing. (See Galatians 3:9)

We need to let the words that God gave to Moses wash over us. "The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace." (Numbers‬ ‭6‬:‭24‬-‭26‬ ‭NRSV‬‬) Words of blessing that need to move from our minds down into our hearts.

And we need to be reminded that, like Abraham, we are blessed by God to be a blessing to others. (See Genesis 12:2)

These reminders often come to us in the precious moments of solitude and silence, when we are able to be still and listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit speaking blessing over us and reminding us of our true identity in Christ. In the quiet place alone with Jesus, our hearts begin to overflow with joy and a deep longing for others to experience the blessing that God so graciously wants to shower upon them.

Today, what are the dominant voices reverberating throughout the halls of your mind? Where is God inviting you to slow down so that you might see His blessings all around you with fresh eyes? And how might God want to use your heart that is overflowing with joy to speak blessing over someone else who is currently walking through a season of life where they feel beaten down by the voices of the world?
