Broken and in Need of a Savior
“But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children.” Galatians 4:4-5 NRSV
Series: Life of the Beloved
Devotional: 4 of 6
So far in this series, we have explored two fundamental truths about who God is and who we are as His beloved children:
As a child of God, we are chosen by God.
We are blessed by God to be a blessing to others.
Today, we will consider a third fundamental truth: we are broken and in need of a Savior.
Genesis, chapter three, tells the story of how the brokenness we all feel entered the world.
"Now the serpent was more crafty than any other wild animal that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God say, 'You shall not eat from any tree in the garden'?" The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden; but God said, 'You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the garden, nor shall you touch it, or you shall die.' " But the serpent said to the woman, "You will not die; for God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made loincloths for themselves." (Genesis 3:1-7 NRSV)
With this one act of disobedience, sin entered the world, ushering in brokenness that would touch every aspect of our human existence. Whether we are young or old, our bodies, our minds, and our spirits have all felt the sting of brokenness. Eventually, the poison of brokenness flowing below the surface of our lives erupts, consuming our relationships, work, and the lens through which we see the world around us.
Sadly, our natural response to the undeniable brokenness in our lives is often to deny, compare, or numb the pain we feel. Although each of these attempts to escape our brokenness may provide some temporary relief, in the end, they send us further down the rabbit hole of brokenness.
Just like Adam and Eve, whom "God made garments of skins for" to cover their nakedness, God has not left us to manage our brokenness alone. "But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children." (Galatians 4:4-5 NRSV)
Because of Christ's finished work on the Cross, we no longer need to hide our brokenness from God and each other. Instead, we can confidently bring our brokenness into the Light of His presence so that He might redeem and restore every aspect of our being for His glory.
